Not By Sight, 24" x 34", 2005

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.  Psalms 42:1

We have a deep yearning in our hearts to know God, to know His will for us, and to live a life of faith; and yet faith is not always easy because faith is not by sight.  We can often feel as if we are blindly groping in the darkness searching for God and His direction for our life.  In the book of Jeremiah God says, “...you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

In this painting the monk’s robe symbolizes a person who has outwardly forsaken the things of this world for the things of God.  Similarly, when we seek Him with all our heart we must inwardly forsake our will and prefer His.

There are instances in the Bible where God's presence is manifested by a cloud or smoke as in the book of Exodus where He came to Moses in a cloud, and in Isaiah’s encounter with God smoke filled the temple.

While there may not be smoke or clouds when we pray, we are nonetheless entering into His presence.
